It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with others instead handling more material or more to make up for time.
It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
