If We Observe the Death Spiral of the Craze of Attacking Play, Let’s Savour Its Legacy.
The Journey of a Phenomenon can be marked by specific steps.
1. The Core Concept
A dominant personality or coaches present a revolutionary approach pledging a panacea for struggling players.
And so it goes. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment in Australia. Tensions are rising. Signs of trouble appear from within. One individual, exposed, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT smeared across his chest as a symbol, has come staggering from the field and is being led away under a blanket for a temporary assignment elsewhere.
Do you ever miss the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of pure instinct.
2. Love-Bombing
Cult leaders promise a new start, hope for a future, camaraderie, success together who all believe in the method.
What did it represent initially? Players celebrating feeling good. Tattoos. Forearms. Jawlines. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, England’s players insist they don’t use the label, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?
However, everyone understands what it is. It’s the player attempting a move so unconventional it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the captain in his final form, a look that says: focused titan, rugged appearance, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to look down and see him playing on the ground bare-chested holding a fish.
It’s the batsman often seen speaking publicly, out there looking like a cheerful animal smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re challenging norms. Certainly, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was entirely positive.
3. The Growth Phase
Building period. Unity enforced by rote learning of mantras. These beliefs may seem irrational to prove commitment.
Is it just me? The reaction, the fury, the feeling of letdown following the initial loss seems too strong, unwarranted. The performance was poor during the match, as is typical there. They were torn apart in the field for a couple of hours when tactics failed, carved around by the batsman imitating their style effectively, adjusting to the pitch, a performer excelling with a kind of light around him.
Now there is the criticism, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a failure. The consensus is that defeat must be total, they need to lose righteously, to be scoured, obliterated, overwhelmed via traditional methods of Mitchell Starc’s movements, the simple basics of the bowler, marking his wickets modestly like he’s just been given a nice new fishing rod. What impact will this have?
4. External Conflict
Problems arise due to setbacks. However, faults are ignored. It begins to thrive on hatred of the outside world.
The fact remains, a few days before the upcoming game, we’ve entered an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this movement. They might succeed overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, failure may follow. In case of defeat it appears we may see the decline.
Prior to that, there are two things to consider about this. More than two years ago, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. People were very angry, which proved the point as it’s known how to confirm lack of cult status is if supporters respond with anger rejecting criticism of the philosophy.
Recent events in the last few days are fascinating. Opposition to the style has now become the cult. Social media is furious, critical analysts, shots of angry middle-aged supporters abroad missing out on play, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.
On the other hand, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed ingrained annoyance at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, stating, your cherished traditions and have honed to distinguish yourselves from others, it’s just a joke after all.
Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a clique, a garden party, a restricted environment with two hundred years of opaque and ritualistic cult history supporting it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the original sports washers. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.
The team have been sealed up within this world for years. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their own experience, forming a new circle, a limited community, but doing it this time with 15 cool guys and a mentor encouraging individuality as long as yourself is quite a lot like myself.
Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you remain stuck.
Reflecting on this, now is the time to show understanding for the movement, to appreciate its good points, which are significant. What is Bazball? Creating a sense of freedom. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
